Got to watch this beautiful flick recently. Tamil cinema in undergoing a transformation which no one could have dreamed 10 years before. Those where the times when Maniratnam only was thought to be an intellectual in tamil film circuit. He only could use technical terms in his rare interviews. Time has changed and Mani is not the only man we expect films from. True to todays tamil film scenario, Mani's exploits are slowly fading away from both common and the intellect's memory. Each and every month, a new director is coming out with a world class cinema and making us long for more. It precisely started from Bala i feel. Bala was the first director to get whistles, claps and cheering from the audience when the name card showed his name (citation required). Then came his erstwhile friend Amir, Sasikumar, 'Pasanga' Pandiaraj, Vetrimaaran, 'Veyil' Vasanthabalan, 'Anjathe' Mishkin, Simbhudevan and I dont remember the name of 'Kalavaani's director. It makes me very much proud to see such great movies coming out and getting immense support from both intellectuals and the mass. These directors are very much successful because, the mixed class with mass.
Susheendran who made 'Vennila Kabaddi Kuzhu' has come out with a superb movie called Azhagar Saamiyin Kudhirai. The story is very very simple. A transporter called Azhagarsaami owns pappu a mule and he leads his life by using it to transport goods to the hilly areas. His pappu gets lost a day after he gets engaged to a beautiful village girl. To get married he needs the mule badly. Meanwhile in a typical village nearby, wooden horse dedicated to carry around Lord Azhagarsaami during festival times goes missing. When pappu reaches there the villagers think it as Azhagarsaami's own horse and feel very happy that in place of wooden horse they have got real horse for their god. When transporter Azhagarsaami reaches the village and claims owner ship of the horse, the villagers beat him up. The film then finishes with how he got his mule back.
Thanks to directors of this kind, that we have got many things other than love, police and panchayat to enjoy in cinema. This film comically depicts superstitious life of our villages and how each and everyone breaks superstitions in their own life, but collectively never goes against it. The Kodaangi, Malayala Namboothiri, Minor and a lot more characters are used beautifully to underline this concept. In those days Kamal haasan was only thought to be a natural actor. Nowadays there are thousands of Kamal haasan in our industry. Each and every unknown actor in this picture has done their role to perfection. Who would have thought a comedy sidekick of Vadivelu named Mr. Thambi Ramaiah can win the national award for best supporting actor. That is the true power of our new breed directors.
I am not a great movie critic, but this flick is truly beautiful. Dont miss it.
